04 June 2002: First SISNeT handheld receiver recently developed

FGI (the Finish Geodetic Institute) has developed the first handheld SISNeT-powered EGNOS receiver under ESA contract. This application is based on an iPAQ Personal Digital Assistant (manufactured by Compaq), and includes a GSM modem and a GPS receiver, in the form of PCMCIA cards. This first version of the product is intended for demonstration purposes. Although several tests are planned for this year, preliminary static and dynamic tests reveal that users will be able to benefit from the EGNOS potential in urban scenarios. ESA plans to extend the contract making the device able to interface with commercial mapping software products. This will allow transparently using applications like Route Planner or Visual Map with EGNOS-corrected positions. The future upgrade of the receiver will also include GPRS support and integrated GPS antenna.
