Frequently asked questions

Q: What is EUTERPE?

A: EUTERPE stands for European Test Centre for Receiver Performance Evaluation. The centre provides testing services to manufacturers of GNSS receivers.

Q: What services are provided at EUTERPE?

A: EUTERPE services comprise the testing of receivers against European GNSS systems (EGNOS at the moment and Galileo in the near future), the provision to the manufacturer of a test report and the issue of a "statement of compliance" if the receiver successfully passes the tests. For more information on how to obtain this "statement of compliance" please see the verification process section of this website.

Q: What are the steps to apply for the product testing? How long do the test process takes? What is provided to the manufacturer at the end of the process?

A: In order to apply for the test of your product please visit the verification process section of this website. The test process takes approximately two weeks. A test report and the possibility to include the receiver on the the List of verified products section of this website upon successful completion of them is provided to the manufacturer at the end of the process.

Q: Will the EUTERPE "statement of compliance" certify my receiver for civil aviation?

A: No, the EUTERPE "statement of compliance" will only verify that your product is suited to work using the latest European GNSS systems. However, safety-of-life applications such as civil aviation may need other types of certification.

Q: Can EUTERPE provide also this certification?

A: At the moment there are no plans to certify safety-of-life products or applications.

Q: What are the differences between the basic profile and extended profile "statement of compliance"?

A: The basic profile level of testing checks the compatibility of a GNSS receiver against the basic capabilities provided by the EGNOS system. Such as the correct use of SBAS correction messages. The extended level of testing provides a much deeper compatibility with the EGNOS system. The extended profile is highly recommended for receivers intended for more professional applications where the device is foreseen to work autonomously for long periods of time. The extended profile also checks the possibility to exchange SBAS provider autonomously from EGNOS to WAAS and WAAS to EGNOS.

Q: What is the confidentiality policy of EUTERPE?

A: The information obtained along the testing of receivers is only available to EUTERPE staff and the manufacturing company itself. Upon completion of the tests a test report is sent to the company and copy is archived at EUTERPE premises. Upon successful completion of the tests a "statement of compliance" can be issued. The manufacturer can publish this "statement of compliance" in any mean of his choice, plus the receiver can be added to the list of verified products of this website.

Q: Are there any test reports publicly available?

A: No, we only provide the test reports to their respective manufacturer.

Q: What are the requirements for a receiver prior to the testing?

A: Any EGNOS receiver with NMEA output and a antenna input can be tested at the centre. The receiver has to be provided with a copy of its manuals and the latest version of the firmware/software.

Q: Can a breadboard/prototype be tested?

A: No. Only end user terminals already in the market can be tested at the centre.

Q: Is it possible to re-test a product to obtain the "statement of compliance" once it has not successfully passed EUTERPE tests the first time?

A: Yes.
