INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENTS

SISNeT handheld receiver based on an iPAQ PDA (developed by FGI under ESA contract)

After the internal validation of the SISNeT concept, the next logical step consists of complementing this work with industrial work. Indeed, several European industries have shown a high interest on the SISNeT technology.

In fact, ESA launched the first contract on the SISNeT technology in March 2002. Under this contract, the Finnish Geodetic Institute (FGI) has recently developed the first SISNeT handheld receiver, based on an iPAQ Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). This device accesses the SISNeT Data Server through a GSM wireless modem, implemented as a PCMCIA card. It also integrates a GPS receiver, also presented in the form of a PC-card. This contract has included some preliminary static and dynamic tests of the developed receiver, both performed in Finland.

The following are some of the projects that will be carried out under ESA contracts in 2002:

  • Development of an integrated SISNeT receiver, including a GPS receiver and a GSM / GPRS link to the Internet;
  • Development of a real-time laboratory software environment for the analysis of the ESTB messages, based on industrial algorithms;
  • Improvement of the SISNeT network performance;
  • Demonstrations of SISNeT receivers embedded into cars;
  • Development of a SISNeT handheld receiver based on a GSM terminal for demonstrations in urban buses;
  • Tests of the accuracy obtained via SISNeT in urban areas.
